Charlotte,
nicknamed the “Queen City,” is the largest city in the state of
North Carolina and the 19th largest city in the United States.
More than 670,000 people call Charlotte home. Charlotte was named
in honor of Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg, who became the wife
of King George III the year before the city’s founding in 1768.
Uptown/downtown Charlotte sits atop a long rise between two creeks
and was built on the gunnies of the St. Catherine’s and Rudisill
gold mines. Charlotte was a site of encampment for both American
and British armies during the Revolutionary War. The war’s legacy
endures today in the nomenclature of several landmarks, including
Independence Boulevard, Independence High School, Independence
Center, Freedom Park and Freedom Drive.
Charlotte is home to Bank of America and Wachovia. Measured by
control of assets, Charlotte is the second largest banking headquarters
in the United States after New York City.
In 2008, Charlotte was chosen the “Best Place to Live in America”
by relocate-america.com in its annual ranking, based on employment
opportunities, crime rates and housing affordability. Charlotte
ranked eighth in the “Best Places to Live and Launch.” CNNMoney.com
selects cities based on their vibrant lifestyles and opportunities
for new businesses.
